The University Grants Commission's Human Resource Development Centre (formerly known as Academic Staff College) of Bharathidasan University is one of the first 50 Academic Staff Colleges, established in the first phase, on the basis of the recommendations of the National Policy on Education (1986). Established in the year 1987, the UGC - HRDC of Bharathidasan University has been playing an active role in providing the opportunities for the Higher Education teachers' career development and professional growth, as envisaged in the National Policy on Education (1986). In the past thirty years, the HRDC has carved a niche for itself by maintaining high standards in the conduct of the different professional development programmes for higher education teachers and administrators.
The objectives of the UGC-HRDC are
(a) to organize Orientation Programmes to the young teachers of the Higher Education system to help them get a holistic vision of the system and understand their roles and responsibilities;
(b) to periodically organize in-service training programmes for the Higher Education teachers to help them enhance their teaching competencies;
(c) to organize subject-specific and inter-disciplinary Refresher Courses to help the Higher Education teachers enrich their domain knowledge;
(d) To organize Short Term Courses and Workshops on relevant themes for the benefit of the Higher Education teachers, Research Supervisors, Research Scholars, Educational Administrators and Staff.
