The HRDC started functioning from November 1987. The National Policy on Education 1986 (NPE), recognized the need for improving the status of the teachers and proposed to provide opportunities for Professional and Career Development so that teachers can fulfill their role and responsibilities within the system of Higher Education. To bring this to reality, the UGC started HRDC.
The HRDC is situated in the Khajamalai Campus (City Campus) in Tiruchirappalli City which is in south east direction at about 3 kms from the Tiruchirappalli Railway Junction and the Central Bus Stand. Dr. R. Karpaga Kumaravel is the Present Director.
